New Orleans,Louisiana! Part 1 of four: city vibe

January 16-17

We spent two days exploring this renowed city.  NOLA (as it is known) is either hated or loved, but certainly is unique.  On the day of our arrival, there was to have been a parade in honour and memory of David Bowie.  We were shuttled into the city from our campground approximately 15 minutes away, and, in that way, avoided all the city driving and parking hassles.   The parade consisted of hundreds of people, some of whom were dressed in Bowie-like attire, milling around and walking the streets, not exactly what we think of as a parade, but colourful and enjoyable none the less.  You will find photos of the revelers in the post entitled "Mardi Gras".  Speaking of that major NOLA event, we were three weeks early for the major festivities.  However, the city was clearly revving up for it, decorating in the traditional colours of purple, green and gold, and selling thousands of Mardi Gras related souvenirs.  It is in a souvenir shop that Dave and I ran into Sandi and Peter Waygood from Shelburne!  what were the chances!  The Waygoods have just sold their house in Arizona (where we were planning to visit them later this winter!) and have bought a large RV in which they will be traveling for the winter. We had dinner with them two days later at a campground in a state park, marveling at the incredible coincidence of having met in NOLA.

My NOLA posts consist of this one, one featuring the beautiful architecture, one of NOLA on a Saturday evening and the final one about Mardi Gras preparations.  Hope you enjoy the photos.

The obligatory cafe au lait and beignets at the Cafe du Monde....We went next door and waited a fraction of the time...beignets are the local version of deep fried dough...who can resist that healthful treat?

Music is definitely an integral part of NOLA culture

...and so is gumbo!
